Hotel San Donato - Bologna centro

Pros: the room and bathroom were big. Location is excellent. Cons: the walls are paper-thin, thinnest we've ever encountered in a hotel room. Unfortunately we could hear everything going on in the rooms next to ours, and I am sure they could hear us. Also, the lights were an issue, the bulbs from the bed-side lamp attached to the wall hurt the eyes. In short, the lighting lay-out was not well thought of and type of light fixtures inappropriate for a hotel room.

Amazing location, very central and close to many touristic spots. I am giving this low score because: -the hotel rooms are a bit outdated. This is a 4 star hotels, yet there were almost no toiletries, no flip flops, or bathrobe. The air conditionning was not working that well. There were 40degrees outside, yet I kept the air conditionning 1 day on, so the temperature was acceptable. The air conditionning was loud, yet not powerful. 2.staff behaviour: they were very cold, didn’t care much,quite bored and not so eager to help. I arrived quite early it s true, around 12pm and check in was 2pm. I understood that room was not ready. Yet they didn’t try to find a solution and hotel seemed empty. When I came back at 1pm something, they gave me a room finally, but the room was hot, air conditionning not on, and toiletries were not fully new. So I expected for 4 stars, the room to be waiting for me in a perfect shape. I asked to have 2 cards to enter room, as I was with my mom, so we go out and come independently , yet they gave us just 1 and did not allow us to have more. When I asked for a taxi, again:bored, as if they made me a favour. I know I sound arrogant, but I stayed many times at Best Western, even in 3 stars at their chain and they offer better service then in this hotel.

This hotel is really well located - tucked in a back street in central Bologna just in between the university and the twin towers it’s in a great location The rooms have fabulous air conditioning and dark shutters so sleeping here is excellent particularly after walking the hot streets of Bologna in June - this part was great The room not so - I did book a single so remember in Italy this means a smaller room with a small bed …not so great ! The bed was hard and the room really small. Not really a problem if you were staying a night or two but I stayed for a week and really needed a bit more space The bathroom however was a good size almost the same as the room - which was great The internet terrible - in fact they give you really only 3 days access even when your staying the week - this frustrating and poor The terrace area is perfect - you can buy some food and eat looking out over the streets & roof top of Bologna. Large public areas to sit and bring food back which was great and a big plus for this hotel Also breakfast was good too - Italian which I like but lots of options and a big buffet. They make you a coffee which is great and even had soy milk which is fabulous Sitting out every morning on the terrace having breakfast and a coffee was a real highlight to this hotel Staff all spoke English and were all very kind too Over all a good stay ….not a cheap hotel but I thought overall a good option in Bologna

An utterly charming hotel in a perfectly central location. The staff were lovely, and went out of their way to make our trip special. As well as having breakfast on the roof terrace, we enjoyed sitting there in the evening, with the view of the Two Towers and listening to the bustle of the city down below. Nevertheless our room was quiet and we slept very well.

Terrific location in the center of the old city, in an old and imposing palace... BUT: Small room with miniature bathroom barely having space for toiletries on a shelf and towels on a rack. The room is Spartan in furnishing, with a fridge but NO coffee maker. The rather old TV, mostly with with channels playing American movies from the 70s-80s had a very capricious remote. I must say, however that the staff was very obliging and helpful and was was very grateful. The overall impression is that of a place with the very strictly necessary to reach the parameters of the hotel search engines, but no interest in offering value to the traveler for the price in terms of infrastructure. Still, this was to some extent compensated by the location and the work of the excellent staff.

My second night in room 212 was outstanding. AC was stronger than I needed. Plenty of space, new flooring and lighting; modern comfortable room. The first night in room 224 was awful. The AC reminded me of a box with a fan inside. Despite having the AC looked at twice, the room never cooled down and sleep eluded me. Room itself was not bad but smaller, older, and darker than 212. It was like two different hotels. It really depends what room you get. Regardless of the room, the staff was friendly and professional although it seemed they may be battling outdated software and perhaps inefficient procedures.
